SUMMARY

The LIFE+ Project LIFE-HerpetoLatvia LIFE09NAT/LV/000239 "Conservation of rare reptiles and amphibians in Latvia", which is co-financed by the LIFE Programme of the European Commission, in a scientific cooperation with the: Institute of Ecology of Daugavpils University; Institute of Systematic Biology of Daugavpils University; Latgales Zoo of Daugavpils city council; Latgales Ecological Society, and with support of the: Ministry of Environment of Latvia; Nature conservation agency of Latvia, had organized the 2nd International Workshop – Conference entitled RESEARCH AND CONSERVATION OF EUROPEAN HERPETOFAUNA AND ITS ENVIRONMENT: BOMBINA BOMBINA, EMYS ORBICULARIS, AND CORONELLA AUSTRIACA* was held in Daugavpils, Latvia on 14th – 15th August 2014.

The aim of the workshop is experience exchange over different aspects of research, management of populations, and conservation in-situ and ex-situ of three project species, meeting with other LIFE projects’ representatives. Two – day free-of-charge workshop included presentations, discussions, field visits to the sites of future habitat improvement works, and visiting of renovated RRABC building.

THE RESULTS OF THE CONFERENCE AND AFTER-LIFE ACTIVITIES:

41 presentations of 64 authors from 11 countries (Belarus, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Russia, Spain, Ukraine, and USA) were presented in a form of oral presentation or poster. New connections and cooperation in researches and nature conservation were created between the participants. The results were published in Abstracts (paper and PDF) and in Proceedings (PDF) in open access in www.life-herpetolatvia.biology.lv.

The participants decided:

1. The International workshop – conference in Daugavpils will be organized bi-annually.

3. The International working group of scientists and conservationists “Research and conservation of Herpetofauna at border of its area” (HerpBA) is established officially.

4. The new international herpetological journal “Herpetological Facts Journal” is established officially.

Information about the Conference

The main topics of the workshop–conference cover different aspects of research, management of populations, and conservation in-situ and ex-situ of three main species of herpetofauna: Bombina bombina, Emys orbicularis, and Coronella austriaca:

The main discussed problem questions of the workshop–conference are:

Main species’ ways of adaptations to historical and new conditions of environment: if this is possible?

Releasing in wild: nature conservation or re-writing of evolution?

Human impact on main species evolution: what is human: “beaver” or “alien”?

Perspective genetics of main species: clear genotype or influence of un-natural selection?

Practical part of the workshop–conference is in a form of work visits to:

Presentations

Presentations are related with the topic of the workshop–conference. Four types of presentations: 1) Oral presentation, 2) Poster, 3) Poster PDF and 4) Printed Presentations are welcome on every aspect of the conference topics.

Types of participation / presentation

There are four types of participation: two “in-person” and two – without visit “in-person” to the place of workshop–conference:

1.           Oral presentation “in person”. The participant visited the workshop–conference and presented his (her) topic as an oral presentation (15 minutes).

2.           Poster presentation “in person”. The participant visited the workshop–conference and presented his (her) topic as a printed poster (A0 or A1 size).

3.           Poster presentation PDF . The participant cannot-visit the workshop–conference, but should send by e-mail presented topic as a poster in A1 size and in PDF format. Address for sending: mihails.pupins@gmail.com. The organizing committee will print the poster and will place it in the poster session. Printing expenses will be covered the budget of the Project.

4.           Printed presentation. The participant cannot-visited the workshop–conference, but should send by e-mail presented topic as an abstract and article in DOC or ODF formats. Address for sending: mihails.pupins@gmail.com. The organizing committee will print the article and will place it in the poster session and will publish the article in the Acta Biologica Universitatis Daugavpiliensis or in Proceedings of the meeting. Printing expenses will be covered the budget of the Project.
